On September 5, 1896, Alice Borrer and Sylvia Broadwood, gentlewomen of southern England, patented a foldable sunshade designed to fasten to the handle of a bicycle. Their invention aimed to improve the stability and fit of the apparatus, thereby offering enhanced protection from the sun.
