On October 6, 1903, Amelia Maxson of New York received a patent for a simple, low-cost device that quickly folded strips of cloth for millinery and dressmaking. Formed from a single piece of metal bent into guiding channels, her design allowed fabric to pass smoothly through the folder to create even folds in a variety of styles.
