On September 14, 1901, Baroness Agnes Bischoffshausen of Coelnische, near Kassel, patented a novel system for making buttonholes. Her invention introduced pre-made buttonhole strips that could be sewn directly onto clothing or linens, replacing time-consuming hand stitching.
