On September 23, 1899, Baroness Magdalene von Linck of Heidelberg patented a portable sanitary bed covering. Her invention consisted of paired disinfected and linen covers that could be fastened over hotel bedding to ensure cleanliness and prevent the spread of disease while traveling.
