On May 31, 1895, Camille-Elisabeth Naegely André and Jenny André of Neuilly, France, received a Swiss patent for a removable shelter with a folding roof. The design used a canvas suspended from sliding rafters on cables, allowing the cover to be quickly deployed or folded away for temporary markets, hangars, or velodromes.
