On December 21, 1895, Esther Filleul Tims, a widow from Ravenscourt Park, London, patented a novel device designed to facilitate the cleaning of windows and other fixtures. Her invention consisted of a sponge mounted on a metallic, triangular-shaped frame, with a handle of suitable length to improve grip and reduce strain on the user’s arms.
