On April 8th, 1908, Florence Amelia Ikin, an inventor from Durban, South Africa, patented a novel handle designed for use in the games of tennis or cricket. The device featured a double metal plate that could be attached to a racquet, allowing players to maintain the face of the racquet in a fixed position during play.
