On May 31, 1890, Franziska Kornmeier of Fischingen in the canton of Thurgau obtained a patent for a simple menstrual hygiene device called a “Hämodekt.” Formed as a pouch with front, back, and side sections secured by leg straps and a waist belt, it could hold a sponge and was designed to fit closely to the body during menstruation.
