On June 6, 1896, Gwladys Muriel Davies, a spinster of Cardiff, patented an improved hairpin designed to stay securely in place. Her invention used corrugated or spiral shapes to grip the hair firmly, preventing slipping or loss even during vigorous activity or washing.
