On June 14, 1927, Jadwiga Nowina Witkowska of Pittsburgh patented an adjustable shoulder strap for women’s underwear that could support multiple garments and be easily removed. Her design used flat metal hooks covered by decorative fabric slides, so that fasteners could be concealed and do not touch the skin.
