On October 29, 1898, Louisa Amelia Swain of Fordwich, near Canterbury, patented a novel cape designed especially for outdoor sports. Her invention featured an easily adjustable, foldable garment with four sections, each shaped to cover the neck, arms, and back during physical activity.
