On October 22, 1935, Nadia A. Ovsey of Los Angeles, California, patented a dual-compartment washing machine. Her invention allowed two separate types of garments or fabrics to be washed simultaneously in separate bodies of washing fluid using a single agitator-driven shaft, increasing washing capacity while preventing cross-contamination.
