On March 1, 1949, Opal M. Gross of Denver, Colorado, received a patent for a modular cooking vessel made from rigid rings joined in a flat frame. Frusto-conical cups locked into the rings by means of exterior lugs, allowing cooks to combine any number of identical cups into a single, stable unit.
